St Mary's Cemetery

Salford | 18 Weeks | £230,000

Project Overview

The St Mary’s Cemetery project involved constructing a portal frame steel building designed to house landscaping plant and machinery. The project required a blend of meticulous planning and sensitive execution due to its location and the operational requirements of the cemetery.

Project Location and Initial Conditions

The construction site was situated within a wooded area of St. Mary’s Cemetery, necessitating the clearing of trees and underbrush. The site was only a few hundred meters away from the chapel, where live services, including funerals and weddings, were regularly held.

The cemetery remained open to the public throughout the construction period.

Structural Specifications

The building was supported by a raft slab foundation with piling to ensure stability. A steel portal frame formed the primary structure, then Kingspan insulated panels were used for cladding to provide thermal efficiency and durability. Masonry was constructed up to a third of the building’s height, incorporating steel mesh sheeting to prevent unauthorized access.
